Tom Haynes, age 84, of Jefferson, Georgia (formerly Snellville, Georgia), passed away at home in the comfort of his family on Saturday, May 28, 2022
Tom was born in April 1938 to Clayton and Nellie Haynes of Atlanta, Georgia. After Tom graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1955, he accepted a job with Western Electric and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps reserve where he served for two years. Following, he then enlisted and served in the United States Air Force for a tenure of four years.
In 1960 while stationed at Offutt Air Force base in Omaha, Nebraska, Tom met and married Lorene Upah. Moving back to Atlanta after completing his service in the Air Force, Tom was reemployed with Western Electric.
In 1967 Tom and Lorene adopted their first of two children, Mark, and their second, Luanne, three years later. Residing in Snellville, Georgia, Tom was a member of First Baptist Church Snellville for 37 years singing in the choir, teaching children’s Sunday School classes, and driving for the bus ministry.
Retiring from AT&T (formerly Western Electric) after 40 years of employment, Tom accepted a position with the Gwinnett County school system as a school bus driver. Tom enjoyed driving sports teams to their games and went on to drive a bus for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He also enjoyed serving in the afterschool program, “The Good News Club” for elementary school aged children with fellow members of his church from Union Baptist Church in Winder, Georgia.
Tom is survived by his wife, Lorene, of 61 years, his children, Mark Haynes and Luanne Byrd, his grandchildren, Madison Byrd and Summer Byrd, his sister, Juanita Ragsdale, his brother, Larry Haynes, and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 31 from 4-8pm at Byrd and Flanigan Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will also be held at Byrd and Flanigan Funeral Home, located at 288 Hurricane Shoals Road NE in Lawrenceville, Georgia on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 11am. A burial service will take place immediately after the Celebration of Life service at Snellville Historical Cemetery with a reception following at the Church on Main (FBC Snellville).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ministries of Union Baptist Church located at 527 Union Church Road, Winder, GA 30680.
