Marjean Simpson Obituary

Marjean (Nabors) Simpson was born October 1, 1929 and raised in Birmingham, AL. She was the quintessential middle child, bookended by an older brother and sister, and a younger brother and sister. She attended Woodlawn High School and fittingly her yearbook quoteread, “always keep smiling”…and she always did! Marjean graduated from the University of Alabama and moved to Virginia where she went on a blind date and met her future husband, John Simpson. Marjean and John relocated to Abingdon, Virginia, followed by Union City, Tennessee and later settled in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Along the journey, they raised four daughters and welcomed five grandchildren. Marjean worked alongside her husband in their auto parts business retiring in 1994 and relocated to Rome in 2000. She was an active member at First Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, First Baptist Church in Rome and Trinity United Methodist where she had a passion for serving others and her community. Marjean’s people skills were on display in numerous capacities from Sunday school teacher, PTA officer, church deacon, choir member, New Romans Club, Floyd County Schools mentor, Lavender Mountain Quilt Guild, and more. Marjean often hosted friends for card games, sewing projects, and jigsaw puzzles and delighted in visits with others as she chronicled their gatherings in her infamous guest book. She was quite the card shark and passed down her strategic skills to her grandchildren whoshe never allowed to win unless they could do so on their own! Marjean’s sense of humor could be described as sassy but sweet, but all reveled in her quick wit and charisma.

Marjean was truly beloved and the immense joy she brought will forever be remembered. She entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on February 19, 2021.  Marjean is survived by her daughters, Susan Robbins (Bill) of Huntsville, AL; Julia Hill of Marietta, GA; Mary McClure (Bill) of Rome, GA; and Jenny Hale (Scott) of Marietta, GA. Proud grandmother of Katie Robbins (Patrick Diggins) of Huntsville, AL; Nate McClure of Smyrna, TN; Max McClure of Savannah, GA; and Sophie Hale of Marietta, GA; sister, Marilyn Dickson of Birmingham, AL; brother-in-law, Jim Railey of Rio Rancho, NM; and sister-in-law, Joyce Nabors of Decatur, AL and numerous loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Marjean was preceded in death by her husband, John Simpson; parents, Francis Murrel Nabors and Dora Naylor Nabors; stepmother, Elizabeth Hale Nabors; brothers, Herschel Nabors and Bill Nabors; sister, Betty Railey; son-in-law, Robert Hill; and grandson, Ryland Robbins.
