Lenora Willodean Smith, 96, passed away peacefully at her residence, The Bridge of Lawrenceville Assisted Living on Monday evening, October 30th, 2023.
Many of her caregivers there called her “Mama” and said she was a pleasure to care for and she was loved by many there. She was very well taken care of there.
She was born at home on July 8th, 1927 to loving parents, Maudie and Leonard Smith in rural Munford, Al. She was the middle daughter of 3 daughters. They owned a small farm, so she and her sisters when old enough would help out by picking cotton and all the vegetables that they grew for them and to sell.
Her Dad was an avid reader of mostly westerns and happened to come across the name, Willodean, and that is how her middle name came to be. Though, she came to be called “Dean” for a nickname and she was called that by her parents and sisters and many family members and continued into her adult life, by friends as well. Some called her “Deanie”.
Growing up, she lived near lots of family and was close to cousins near her own age. She also loved animals and had pets. One was a pet pigeon that she named “Dovey” and taught it tricks. She also had a pet hen that she named “Brownie” and she taught Brownie to sing when Lenora asked her to! Brownie could sing alto and soprano!!!
She met her future husband in high school, so they were high school sweethearts. Wilmer was a few years older and he happened to spot her from an upstairs window at school and saw her playing softball down below and said to his friend close by that he was going to marry that girl one day!
And yes, she was born a Smith and married a Smith, but not related AT ALL! And thats exactly what happened, on March 12th, 1943, shortly before he joined the Navy. So she became a war bride and sometime later she was able to join him in San Diego, CA. before he was assigned to a ship and eventually shipped out to the Pacific.
Long story made short, they were married 76 years before Wilmer passed away in 2019. Lenora was a full-time homemaker and mother of 4 children. She was a very loving and protective mother. She loved cooking and was a wonderful cook & loved trying out new recipes. In later years, she continued to delight her many many family members with these delicious dishes and she loved watching cooking shows and was also an avid garderner.
When she and; Wilmer lived in the northern VA. area, she was very active in volunteering at the Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, VA. for 20 years and filled in many roles there as a coordinator, gift shop and patient services and enjoyed it immensely.
Lenora was preceded in death by her parents & her 2 sisters and her husband, Wilmer L. Smith of 76 years and 2 sons, Jeff C. Smith and Tony L. Smith. She is survived by 2 daughters, Brynda S. Roth and Pamela Orlandella and her son-in-law, Frank J. Roth. 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, named below: Rhonda Regan, Robin Harrison, Melanie Brooks, Kelly Smith, Janine King, T.J. Smith, Michael Orlandella and Dustin Smith. Her great grandchildren are: Josh Proctor, Bill Regan, Blane Roehrich, Luke Brooks, Hunter Fogarty, Makenzie King, Arya Smith, Keira Orlandella, Rocky Orlandella and Samantha Smith.
