Icy Bernice Clayton Johnson, age 89, of Lawrenceville, Georgia passed away on September 3, 2020. Bernice was born on November 23, 1930 in Barberton, Ohio. She was valedictorian of Barberton High School Class of January 1949. After her marriage to Lewis Johnson in 1950, she moved to Atlanta to pursue her life’s dream – creating a home for her husband and children. She was the quintessential southern lady and cook with her world-famous homemade biscuits.
Bernice always took initiative in leadership roles at home and in the community. In the fifties and sixties, she was a member and President of the West End Jaycettes. Her family were charter members of Rock of Ages Lutheran Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia where she served as President of the Women’s Group and chaired multiple church committees. She attended the Atlanta Women’s Lutheran Cursillo #1 in 1974 and served as Rector of Atlanta Lutheran Women’s Cursillo #18 in 1981. A member of Gwinnett Medical Center Auxiliary for 28 years, she volunteered 11,480 hours of service and was always in the top five in cumulative hours served. During her tenure, she served two terms as President and was a member of the Board of the Gwinnett Medical Center Auxiliary and chaired many committees.
A loving wife and mother, she was fiercely devoted to her family. She took great pride in her children and was a wonderful Mama, Granie, aunt, sister, and daughter. Bernice had the most beautiful penmanship and believed a handwritten note, in cursive, without abbreviations, was the only way to communicate. Each year she would write a personal letter to each grandchild remembering the experiences that they shared during that year. These letters were saved and were not read until they were given to each grandchild on their 18thbirthday. These much-anticipated letters are cherished memories. Bernice also had one of the quickest wits which she has passed on to her children and grandchildren.
Bernice is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Walter Lewis Johnson, Sr. She is survived by her four children – Dr. Sherilyn Johnson of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Taralee Johnson Bartholomew of Columbia, South Carolina, Darlenda Johnson McNaull of Duluth, Georgia and Walter Lewis Johnson, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia, eleven grandchildren – Melissa Bell Wheeler, Brad Bell, Michael Weaver, Brian Weaver, Tommy McNaull, Amber McNaull, Maxwell McNaull, Kelley McNaull, Ansley Johnson Autry, Amy Johnson Thompson, Ally Johnson, sixteen great grandchildren RJ, Alex, Ben and Chris Wheeler; Bradley Bell; Hayley and Garrett Weaver; Daniel and Elliott Weaver; Liam, Ellie and Callie McNaull; Lexsy, Lola, and Larson Autry; Clay Johnson, and expecting the seventeenth grandson Thompson, brother Nathan Clayton, sister in law, Mili Katz, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
