A Living Example of a Woman of God
Woman of God: (noun) A woman who is devout in her belief in God, consistent in her relationship with her Savior, and dedicated to serving the Lord and others.
Dr. Carol Diaz Robles was a passionate woman of God. Her love for Christ shined bright and touched the lives of her family, friends, colleagues, students, and all whom she met.
Born into a God-fearing family, her hunger and thirst for righteousness began at an early age. Arriving on October 24, 1950 to Elizabeth Caquias Diaz and Eugenio Perez Diaz, she was the second of ten children: Lynda, Carol, Abigail, Elizabeth, Eugene David, Judith, Jose Antonio, Felipe, Peter Steven and Dorcas Diana. As she grew up and the siblings kept arriving, Carol had plenty of opportunities to develop a gentle and loving leadership style that encouraged her siblings and friends to thrive.
Carol’s mother emphasized to all her children the importance of education. This motivated Carol to attend New York University for her Bachelors in Spanish and Masters in Social Work, followed by a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University.
Starting her career as a Social Worker, Carol transitioned into Mental Health Counseling before accepting the position as an undergraduate professor of Nyack College where she retired in 2017 as the Associate Dean of the Alliance Graduate School of Counseling. As many of her students and colleagues have expressed; Carol counseled, guided, and encouraged them to notice their potential when they themselves could not see it in the moment.
When it came to love, God had a special Man of God set aside for her. Carol Diaz first met Luis Robles at a youth group meeting held at her church. Yet a romantic connection did not form until years later, when Carol walked into the John 3:16 bookstore looking for Sunday School materials for her class. A community member asked for help - which she, of course, gladly gave. Had she not stayed to help, she likely would have missed the next person to walk in; Luis. Luis says it was Carol's generosity to help others that was most attractive and led him to ask her out on their first date. That date led to another date and another date until they set their wedding date for February of 1979. This was the beginning of a lifetime of love and family, which includes, four children: Rebecca, Aimee, David, and Jonathan and three grandchildren: Nayelli, Zyanna, and Ayva.
Above all, Carol dedicated her life to Christ and His plan for her. As a young lady of Calvary Church Assemblies of Christian Churches, she served as Sunday School teacher, director of the youth for the Assemblies of Christian Churches, and the Dean of Spanish Eastern School of Theology. During her years as the First Lady of the First Christian Church of the Valley; she served as a Children’s Pastor and Sunday School teacher and worked alongside the Kitchen Ministry and Home Visitation Ministry.
Her compassion and kindness extended well beyond the walls of the church and out into the world. Carol was well known to be generous with her time, always willing and excited to help the community, ready with a kind word, and a passion for teaching that engaged and oftentimes included the listener to make any subject enjoyable to learn.
Carol's willingness to give of her time and whole-hearted love ensured that anyone influenced by her was nurtured towards excellence through her love of God. She will be missed dearly by those she inspired directly and indirectly, but her light will continue to shine through them.
As a living example of a Woman of God, let us live as she lived according to Galatians 6:9-10 (NIV), “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
