Catherine Graves, 64, was born Catherine Jean Moss to Jean Smith Moss and Luke Joseph Moss on December 20, 1957 in Rome, Georgia. She attended Central Primary, St. Mary’s Catholic School, Model High School, and is a 1975 graduate of Coosa High School of Rome. After attending Floyd Junior College for one year, she transferred to the University of Georgia, where she graduated from the Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Public Relations in 1979. She also attended Georgia State University, where she pursued a master’s degree in Marketing.
On January 18, 1986, Catherine was married to Peter (John Paul) Graves in Rome, Georgia, whom she had met in Athens GA while both were attending the University of Georgia. Four years later, in 1990, she gave birth to their first child, John Paul, at Texas Women’s Hospital in Houston and 20 months afterward, in 1992, had her second child, Margaret Leigh, at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.
She held various positions in PR over a career spanning more than 35 years, including at the PR firms Hill and Knowlton in Atlanta and Houston, the Roundtree Group in Atlanta, the advertising firm Goodwin, Dannenbaum, Littman &Wingfield of Houston, and at MCI Communications Corporation of Atlanta. Later, she worked in sales for Colwell Banker Upchurch Realty and the University of Georgia, both in Athens GA.
Catherine was a self-trained gourmet cook, which she shared with her husband, and was also an avid vegetable gardener. She felt that her greatest accomplishment, however, was as a mother to her beloved children. She was also a devoted Bulldog fan.
Catherine is survived by her husband, John Paul Graves, Sr. ,of Watkinsville, her two children, John Paul Graves, Jr., of Atlanta, and Margaret Leigh Graves of Washington, DC and by her sister, Janice Moss Winterboer, nephew Richard Lee Winterboer, nieces Patricia Katherine Winterboer and Promise Moss Garner, as well as her sister-in-law Beth Moss, all of Rome GA. She is the sister of the late Luke Joseph Moss of Rome GA. Catherine was the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Washington Smith and the late Mr. and Mrs. Luther Moss, all of Rome GA.
She is also survived by her brother-in-law Mr. Edward Mitchell Graves, Jr., his spouse Mrs. Edward Mitchell Graves, Jr. ,niece Sarah Graves Lewis, all of Knoxville, TN., and nephew Edward Mitchell Graves III of Cookeville, TN. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Catherine Graves Dunson and nephew William Dunson, both of Iowa, and nephew Andrew Paul Dunson of Atlanta.
