Mr. Anderson Phillips, III also known as “Sonny”, was born on January 5, 1965, in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Anderson Phillips, Jr. and Ollie Mae Phillips. He departed this life on June 11, 2022.
Anderson confessed in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Powderly Church of Christ in Birmingham, Alabama under the leadership of his father. As he matured, he worked alongside his father cleaning the church, maintaining the church grounds, accompanying his father to the local radio station for weekly sermon broadcasts and driving the church van on Sundays to pick up church members.
He united in holy matrimony to Karen Lynn Jenkins on June 3, 1989. God blessed them with one daughter, Kayla Joi. Anderson and Karen called Chesapeake, Virginia home for 11 ½ years until finally moving to Hoschton, Georgia in 2004.
Anderson earned a BS degree in Accounting from Savannah State University in 1988 and later went on to earn a MS Degree in Elementary Education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia in 1994. After graduating from Savannah State University, Anderson joined the United States Navy in 1988 entering the Officer ranks. By 1996, he had earned the rank of Lieutenant. His duty stations, during this time, included Charleston, South Carolina and Virginia Beach, Virginia. After leaving the Navy in May of 1996, he began his teaching career with Seatack Elementary School located in Virginia Beach. His love of technology led him to a career in the IT field working for Raytheon (Virginia Beach, Virginia) and Encompass Digital Media (formerly known as Crawford Communications) in Atlanta, Georgia. Most recently, Anderson worked as a Senior Business Analyst with Gwinnett County Public Schools Data Governance Department.
Anderson had a quiet nature but was a great supporter of family and friends. He was an avid motorcyclist, amateur photographer and most recently was learning how to fly a drone. Anderson never met a challenge he wasn’t up to conquering. During Kayla’s cheerleading years, he attended every game cheering from the stands and being the ultimate “Cheer Dad”. Anderson was also the best “pet daddy” to Khloe and Sampson. He was a devoted husband, loving father, amusing son and brother-in-law, and supportive sibling.
Anderson leaves to love and cherish his memories his wife, Karen Phillips; one daughter, Kayla Joi Phillips; one brother, Anthony (Chanel) Phillips (Douglasville, Georgia); two sisters, Glenda Phillips (Locust Grove, Georgia) and Geraldine Washington (Calera, Alabama); his father and mother-in-law; Charles and Bobbie Jenkins (Bessemer, Alabama); nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Final arrangements have been entrusted to Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home Carrollton Chapel. 770-836-0044.
