"I Did It My Way"

Abdul Samì-Ataykak Haya, affectionately known as Tyrone (Mark) Howard Sr. and "Butch," but best known to all as "Abu," was born on November 14, 1950, to C.S. and Estella Delores Howard (Payne) in Orville, Alabama. Raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where he spent most of his life, Tyrone departed this world on August 5, 2024, at 3:18 a.m. at Johns Creek Hospital in Johns Creek, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sisters, Diana and Sharon, who now rest in God's memory.

Tyrone leaves behind a rich and enduring legacy. He is survived by his sons: Tyrone Jr. (Theresa), Terrence (Mira), Antonio (Yvonne), Terrelle (Christina), Timothy Pannell (Zora), Enrico McGregor (Micki), Abdul Rahim, and stepson Keith Harris. He is also survived by his daughters: Terresita and Samaria; stepdaughters: Janis McGregor and Kashmir Thompson; and his beloved nieces, LaShon Wheeler and LaRhon Woods (Gregory), whom he lovingly raised as his own. Additionally, he is survived by his brother, L.C. Pickett, and sister, Bettie Gayle (Pickett), along with a host of cherished grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-nephews, great-nieces, and cousins.

Known to many as Abu, Tyrone was a cherished father, beloved uncle, nurturing grandfather, and a pure creative soul—a legacy that continues to inspire future generations. A master carpenter, poet, and songwriter, his life was a testament to endurance, perseverance, unshakable faith, determination, boundless creativity, deep wisdom, and the enduring power of love. As a devoted father of nine, he inspired his children and all who knew him with his vivid imagination, sharp intelligence, street savvy, and unexpected kindness and generosity.

Tyrone's artistry, expressed through oil, acrylics, woodworking, marble, and tile mosaics, crafted with skilled hands and a keen eye, will continue to bring joy to all who encounter his life's work. His poetry and songs, rich with wit and wisdom, stand as lasting tributes to his hopeful and longing spirit. Through his work at Durapendable Construction, Tyrone not only remodeled homes and built structures but also cultivated meaningful, lifelong relationships, fostering a sense of community through utility, friendship, and connection.

Tyrone's legacy can be summed up in two words: Family & Integrity. One of his favorite quotes came from his mother when, at around 14 years old, he told her, "I'm getting too big for you to be trying to whoop me." Her response was, "Since you think you done got too big for me to whoop you, I'm gone let those streets whoop you, and you gone wish that it was still just me whooping your butt."

Tyrone's character was forged through bravery and the blessing of having survived an era that claimed so many brothers-of-color in their prime. He endured the racism that came from being a man of mixed heritage, born with striking blue eyes that captivated women and incited jealousy in others. He faced life's challenges with an intelligence and wit that belied his streetwise persona, always quick with a rhyme, speaking without filter or apology—like a true Player.

Tyrone will forever be remembered as a versatile and gifted artist—a beacon of hope and strength to his children and nieces, who will always love him unconditionally. Though his time with us was cut short, his impact will be felt for generations to come.

Rest in peace, our dearest Abu. Your creativity, love, and light will never fade, for you shared it with us—your children, family, friends, and all who knew you. Though we say goodbye too soon, your legacy burns brightly within us. Ah Salam Alaikum, Abu (Peace be upon you), until we meet again.
