IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard Lee
Overslaw
October 14, 1956 – December 5, 2020
Richard Lee Overslaw was born October 14, 1956 to Elmer and Violet Overslaw in Lyons, New York. He lived there until he went off to boarding school. First to Union Springs Academy in Union Springs, New York, then to Pioneer Valley Academy in New Braintree, Massachutes where he met the love of his life, Tara Alemsahi Murray. To that union came one child, Christopher Lee Alexander Overslaw.
Richard loved sports both as a participant and as an observer. He was a member of the Rochester All Stars as a guard where he averaged 28.7 points a game. He played a key role in his teams' victories, setting up plays and dribbling up the middle of the court. He carried his skills on to high school as #00. He excelled in football as a quarter back and baseball as a short stop.
Richard would accept a position with Swift Transportation where he worked until be became ill. He not only cared about lining his own pockets as a Million Mile Driver, but he trained over 100 drivers to have the same career if they chose. He was a member of the Swift Transportation Advisory Board where he made recommendations to the company that would assist other drivers and further the company's success. It was nothing for him to pull into a terminal with his specially decorated truck that said 5-year Million Mile driver and assist a newbie to work on their equipment or get a load so they could get moving. He was always ready to lend a hand or a word of encouragement to his fellow drivers.
While Richard was short in stature, he had a gigantic heart and he never met a stranger. Richard loved his family and for the ones that lived afar he made sure that he called them often if not daily especially his mother and father and his late mother in law Miriam Murray. He also loved his many friends, and he was sure to keep in daily contact with many of them especially his friend whom he affectionately called "Dizzy Dazzie." Richard loved children and children loved him. He often stopped at the truck stops and would purchase small tokens to give the children to show them he was thinking of them while he was on the road. The children looked forward to their "grandaddy's" return and their welcome home warmed his heart.
Richard is survived by his wife Tara Alemsahi Murray Overslaw, their son Christopher Lee Alexander Overslaw (Anta); their granddaughter Asia Overslaw, three step grandchildren Robert, Marilyn, and Isaiah all of Lawrenceville, Georgia. His parents Elmer and Violet Overslaw;his siblings: Debbie Withey; Becky (Terry) Feist; Steven (Dana) Overslaw, and Brenda (Eddie) Hellie. His father in law Robert Murray Sr. and three brothers in law, Robert Murray Jr., Leland Murray, and Kiffle Murray. He is also survived by his Aunts Alma Schanz and Margaret Williams and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins who loved him dearly.
Richard now sleeps in the promise of Christ that soon and very soon that those who are faithful will be reunited with him and with Christ.
