Nelson Ping Ching
Chao
Jun 15, 1935 — Jul 5, 2026
Nelson was born on June 15, 1935, in Taipei, Taiwan. He immigrated to the US in 1960 and earned his bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University (1962) and master’s degree from Georgia Tech (1964) in Textile Sciences. He returned to Taiwan to marry his wife Judy in 1965. They moved to Virginia, where he worked for DuPont for a number of years. They eventually returned to NC State, earning his PhD in 1974 while they raised a young family. He then joined The Chemical Group with Monsanto in Pensacola, Florida, where he worked as a senior specialist in their Nylon Technology Research & Development Division. He enjoyed a productive 23-year career and was awarded a patent that contributed to the development of Monsanto’s Wear-Dated carpet. After retiring in 1997, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, visiting Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. They moved to Georgia in 2005 to be closer to family and made Atlanta their home. They enjoyed being grandparents, became members of the Atlanta Chinese Christian Church, the Asia American Senior Citizens Association (ASSCA), and could be found exercising daily at the JM Tull YMCA. He is survived by his loving wife Judy, daughter Helen (Andrew), son Emory (Irene), four grandchildren, Jared, Jason, Kathryn, Koen, and numerous relatives in Taiwan, including three siblings. He will always be remembered for his quiet, gentle nature, kindness, and intellect. His presence will be truly missed by all.
In lieu of sending flowers, please consider making a donation to the Bright Focus Foundation who supports research for Alzheimer's, as well as, macular degeneration, a condition that contributed to Nelson's poor vision.
