Johnnie “Galen” Holzhausen, age 83, of Hoschton, Georgia, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026.
A visitation with family will be held from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 8, 2026, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM in the Chapel at Byrd & Flanigan Crematory Funeral Service, 288 Hurricane Shoals Road NE, Lawrenceville, GA 30046.
Galen was born on January 14, 1943, in Clay County, Illinois, the son of the late John “Johnnie” Henry and the late Dorothy Jean (Pickel) Holzhausen.
After graduating from North Clay Community High School in 1961, he went to Ranken Trade School in St. Louis for refrigeration. He worked for Kershener Refrigeration in Effingham, Illinois. Galen married JoAnn in 1965, and after they moved to Champaign, Illinois, he worked for Nance Refrigeration from 1966 until 1971. After welcoming his two sons, Galen started Frosty’s Frigeration with Fred Otten in July of 1977.
He sold Frosty’s in October of 1992 and started working for Bohn Refrigeration in Danville, Illinois. In 1993, he was transferred to Heatcraft in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and retired from Heatcraft/Lennox in 2016.
Galen enjoyed traveling, camping, boating, making new friends and square dancing – where he met Susan and married her in 2008. He had many talents, loved tinkering with small things, and had quite a collection of tools.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, David Scott Holzhausen (1966) and Jimmy Allen Holzhausen (2024).
He is survived by: Wife: Susan Marie Holzhausen of Hoschton, GA; Son: Jeff Holzhausen of Loganville, GA; Son and Daughter-in-law: Steve and Angie Holzhausen of Loganville, GA. Brothers and Sisters-in- law: Darrell and Linda Holzhausen, Glen and Judy Holzhausen, Kenny and Vicky Holzhausen. Brother, Chris Holzhausen. Sister-in-law Connie Holzhausen. Stepson and Daughter-in-law: Phil and Sabrina Nardone. Grandson: Kodie Holzhausen, Granddaughters: Emily Nardone and Lindsay Bracken. Cousin: Benny Holzhausen, Fort Townsend, Washington. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
