Obituary

Henry Stephens and Evelyn Iona Smith delighted in life, living it to the fullest together for more than 73 years. It is with deep sadness that we announce their passing; Henry on April 16, 2020 and Evelyn on September 2, 2024. They leave behind two sons, Stephen G. Smith (Patricia) of Huntsville, Alabama, and Michael H. Smith (Sally) of Suwanee, Georgia, five grandchildren, Jason(Jennie), Erin(Shane), Jessica(Zach), Sarah and Jake(Allyssa), and six great-grandchildren, Emma, Lillian, Michael, Bella, Jackson, and Sam. They were faithful, active members of the Southern Baptist Church as they met at Boulevard Heights Baptist Church, remained active at several others, then later were members of Sunrise Baptist in Lawrenceville following a move to that area. They were residents of Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, Georgia for the last 13+ years.

Henry was born in Marietta, Georgia June 9, 1923, one of 6 siblings to Carrie Evalina & Thomas Lumpkin Smith. He joined and served in the Navy as a Signalman on several destroyers during World War II and was honorably discharged November 2, 1945. Henry worked in several professions before joining Southern Railway where he spent the rest of his career. He was devoted to his family often working a second job selling mens suits at Rich's when extra money was needed. He served jubilantly as a little league coach for many years in support of both boys. Henry reconnected with his military commitment actively serving in several roles in the Snellville local VFW Post 4180 and as Commander at American Legion Post 232

Evelyn was born in Loganville, Georgia September 17, 1931 to Modine Velma & Melvin Lamar Gordon, the middle child of three siblings. She enjoyed clerical office work devoting her entire professional career to this pursuit with a sizable break as a housewife and Mother.  She spent the majority of her career and retired from the Georgia State Patrol headquarters as the Captain's Clerical Assistant. She was a prolific reader enjoying Christian writings in particular though she didn't miss many issues of the Readers Digest. She was an exceptional cook never missing an opportunity to provide meals for family gatherings, in support of church or community outreach, to a sick neighbor or member of her Sunday School Class. Her cookware was retired when a stroke forced her to move to Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett because it was literally worn out.

In retirement, both were active in the Silver Stars Square dance Club traveling the US coast to coast, Canada, Mexico and Europe to perform. They attended several shipmate reunions of the battleships on which Henry served. They remained active in the Snellville and Lawrenceville communities serving weekly as volunteers in Eastside Senior Friends at the local hospitals and clinics. There will be a combined graveside memorial service for Henry and Evelyn at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 2:00 pm led by the Reverend Don Witzel. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer Association or to your favorite charity.
