Ernest Alvin "Mac" McCurley, aged 98, passed away peacefully on November 26th, 2024, in Jefferson, Georgia.
He is survived by his children Fran Feller (husband Richard), Carol McCurley, Rob McCurley (wife Janet), by his stepchildren Dana Wildsmith (husband Don), Gaylon Scoates (wife Angie), Luellen Hart (husband Ed), by his grandchildren Jennifer Lautenschlager, Cathy Lautenschlager (husband Jeremy Muhlich), Matt McCurley, Ali McCurley, Snow Wildsmith (husband Barry Gray), Andrew Hart, Elizabeth Butler (husband Frank), Marcy Cheatham (husband Sid), and by several great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Ernest Leroy McCurley and Jessie Pearl Cline McCurley, his brother Bob McCurley, his first wife Alice McCurley and his second wife Grace Scoates.
To family and friends he went by either Alvin or Mac. He was born in Gadsden, Alabama, in 1926. After graduating from Gadsden High School, he enlisted in the Navy in October, 1944. He served as a radio and radar technician in the Pacific Theater during the last year of World War II. After the war he attended Georgia Tech where he completed an engineering degree. There he met his first wife Alice Ann Hamilton. They married in 1950 and had three children Fran, Carol and Rob. While the children were young he completed a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from UCLA. After losing Alice to cancer, he married Grace Scoates in1996. They had over 19 happy years together until she passed in 2016.
He had a long career working as an engineer mainly in the aircraft and defense industry. His longest tenure as an employee was at Lockheed Georgia from which he retired after working for many years on the C5 military aircraft.
He was a quiet, thoughtful, intelligent man. He was kind to family and friends and generous, always ready to give aid to those in need. He could sometimes be awkward showing affection with words, but his actions and attitude always made his love clear to those around him.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 7th, at Corinth Memorial Gardens, Loganville, Georgia. No visitation is scheduled. Arrangements by Byrd and Flanigan Crematory & Funeral Service, Lawrenceville, Ga 770-962-2200
