IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David Clyde
Luttrell
May 1, 1946 – September 30, 2016
David Clyde Luttrell, a long-time resident of Gwinnett County, passed away on September 30th, 2016, at the age of 70. Born on May 1st, 1946 in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, David was quite the world traveler in his youth. This is in no small part due to his stepfather, Wilford "Red" Moore, being in the Navy. David and Red, along with David's mother Margie Moore (nee Butz), settled for a time in the Philippines, where David graduated high school in 1965. It was at that point that Red gave him $60 and a plane ticket and told him "good luck." David made his way back to Pennsylvania and within days he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Over the next four years he jumped out of countless airplanes, flew reconnaissance missions over countries not to be named, and served in the Vietnam War. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Austin, TX, and Tampa, FL, where he was honorably discharged in 1969. He followed his military service by attending the University of South Florida, where he received a degree in Public Affairs. He utilized those skills over numerous jobs such as speech writer, zoning manager, lobbyist, and technical writer. He settled on a career in proposal management in the computing industry, working for the likes of IBM and HP before eventually becoming an independent contractor. After moving to Georgia, David became heavily involved in the Georgia Vietnam Veteran's Association (GVVA). He designed their logo, sat on its board, and organized and led several Veterans Day Parades. He was a man of simple pleasures, be it woodworking in his workshop, target practice with his (many) guns, or watching his Pittsburgh Steelers in his man cave. In his final years, at his happiest he could be found smoking a fine cigar, drinking a scotch, and having philosophical conversations with his Burn Brothers deep into the night. David is survived by his wife Sandy, his sons Chris and Jason, daughters-in-law Joanna and Annie, great aunt Margaret Butz, uncles Paul and Doug Butz, and many cousins. He is pre-deceased by his mother Margie Moore, stepfather Wilford Moore, and godfather Bud Butz. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 6PM on Tuesday, October 4th at Grace New Hope Church (1766 New Hope Road, Lawrenceville GA 30045). Inurnment with military honors will be held at 12PM on Wednesday, October 5th at Georgia National Cemetery (5580 Knox Bridge Highway, Canton GA 30114). Attendees are asked to arrive 30 minutes early and proceed to the Public Information Center Building. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that you make a donation in David's honor to either the Georgia Vietnam Veterans Association or the American Diabetes Association .
