Danièle Andrée Raymonde Piette Rieder was born in Cachan, a suburb of Paris, France, on June 16, 1931, and passed away in Johns Creek, Georgia, on November 2, 2026. A woman ahead of her time, she lived a remarkable life defined by courage, intelligence, curiosity, resilience, and devotion to her family.
An only child, Danièle spent her childhood in Cachan. During World War II, during the occupation of Paris, her family sought refuge at their country home in Burgundy, Villers-sur-Yonne, where she also spent her vacations. It remained one of her most cherished places throughout her life. She carried vivid memories of those years and loved sharing her stories, offering firsthand glimpses of history through the eyes of a young girl who had lived it.
Brilliant and determined, Danièle was one of only three women studying botany and biology at The Sorbonne University. After graduating, she joined the Pasteur Institute as a biotechnician, contributing to scientific research. During a trip to a medical conference at NYU, she met her future husband, Dr. Ronald F. Rieder. Fate brought them together again when Ronald moved to Paris for a fellowship and his laboratory was located next to hers. They married in France in 1963, and Danièle courageously left with Ronald to begin a new life in New York.
She continued her scientific work at the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, where she became deeply devoted to the families and boys she came to know. Although she loved science and discovery, she ultimately chose to devote herself to raising her children and took great pride in their family home in Flower Hill, NY.
Related to Danièle's intellectual curiosity, she loved books, music, gardening, and learning, often researching any subject that came up in conversation. She took courses in everything from caning and upholstery to Italian and Japanese, attended monthly performances at the Philharmonic, and traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America. She was also a wonderful cook who took great pleasure in preparing meals for family and friends. She seemed to always have a story for every subject and loved sharing them.
Danièle was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Ronald F. Rieder. She is survived by her children, David Rieder (Shelley Garrigan) and Isabelle Lindberg (Robert), and her four grandchildren, Ari and Evaleah Rieder, and Noah and Henry Lindberg who adored her as much as she adored them.
Danièle lived life with resilience and a determination that impressed everyone around her. Her stories, strength, and love will remain with all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
