Alan Matthew “Al” Honold, 66, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on the morning of February 27, surrounded by his loving wife and children.
Al was born on May 4, 1959, in Carroll, Iowa, to Romaine and Cleo Honold. From an early age, he developed a strong work ethic and a natural talent for working with his hands—gifts that would shape both his career and his hobbies throughout his life.
He earned Associate of Arts degrees in Arts and in Bricklaying and Masonry, building a foundation for a lifelong career in construction, development, and project management. Over the years, Al’s expertise spanned numerous trades and skills.
Al built an extensive career in concrete focused development, earning a reputation for precision, durability, and craftsmanship. His work spanned major roadway and interstate projects across Iowa, Georgia, South Carolina, and West Virginia. From large-scale concrete paving and structural work to complex infrastructure coordination, he played an integral role in building and improving the highways and transportation systems that communities rely on every day. Most recently, he worked with the University of Georgia, where he oversaw construction on many campus projects, leaving a lasting mark through the roadways and buildings he helped bring to life.
Al was more than a skilled builder—he was a respected leader and mentor. He took great pride in teaching the next generation of tradesmen, generously sharing his knowledge, high standards, and steady guidance. Many dedicated employees followed him throughout his career, a testament to the loyalty he inspired and the deep respect he earned.
Al was a true craftsman at heart. He found joy in woodworking and carpentry, welding, restoring bicycles, gardening, and barbecuing for family and friends. He loved music, writing, and reading, and he approached life with creativity, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for building— whether it was a project, a meal, or a meaningful conversation.
Above all, Al cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Elaine Honold; his children, Matt Honold and Sarah Miller; his son-in-law, Derron Miller; his treasured grandchildren, Miles and Scottie Miller; his mother, Cleo Honold; his aunt, Alta Mae Pierick; and his siblings, Chuck Honold and Mikki Kinning. He was preceded in death by his father Romaine Honold and his grandparents George and Mae Honold.
Al will be remembered for his steady presence, skilled hands, generous spirit, and the love he poured into his family and work. His legacy lives on not only in the streets and interstates he helped construct, but in the lives he shaped and the memories he created. A celebration of life is being planned and will be announced at a later date. “Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die tomorrow.”
