Mary Elizabeth Gibbs Hawks (Betty), 89, of Snellville, Georgia died on Wednesday, October 23, 2019. Betty lived with her son, Timothy Hawks, and his Wife, Lila Hawks, and passed away at home following a recent illness. Betty was born in Tiger, Georgia on April 15, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Reverend Leonard Burns and Ruth Perry Gibbs. Betty graduated from Montreat College in Black Mountain, NC. She was a wonderful mother to six children, worked in specialty and antique shops, and was an artist. She was a fine seamstress, quilter and cross-stitched many a pillow, picture and sampler throughout her lifetime. She loved beautiful things, whether it was the mountain landscape or a collage she created. She and her late husband, Robert Sydney Hawks, were married for 53 years. They retired to Blairsville, Georgia in July 1990 and were active members of the Mountain Presbyterian Church. She remained in Blairsville until she moved to Snellville, Georgia in May 2013. Surviving are her daughter, Ann Perry Hawks of Albuquerque, New Mexico; twin sons, Robert Frederick Hawks of Bradenton, Florida and Mark Hamilton Hawks of Bismarck, North Dakota; sons Richard Gibbs Hawks of Redding, Connecticut, and Timothy Burns Hawks of Snellville, Georgia; daughter, Elizabeth Hawks Dobyns of Reidsville, North Carolina; four daughters-in-law and one son-in-law; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, the Family would like donations given to local community Food Banks or the charity of your choice. A Private Family ceremony will be held at a later date.
